Training Over the Holidays
As Reported By Ironman.com
Dec 28, 2008

Like a game of hide-and-go-seek, ready or not, the holiday season is upon us. For the long-distance triathlete, this poses some questions.

Such as: Anticipating some days off work, should you morph into maniacal base-training mode, squeezing in extra run at 10K pace and maybe sneaking off for a century ride just because you can?

LifeSport Age Grouper Nell Stephenson 2nd Overall at Seattle Marathon
Dec 09, 2008
Here is Nell's report on her breakthrough 3:03 marathon: I was so ready to run after a week of restraining myself from my favorite activity! I went straight to the front of the line and took off slightly faster than my coach had advised, but fell into the proper pace by mile 2 or 3. I led for the first few miles and then ran with a couple of other women for about 6 or 7 miles before two of them passed me. I kept telling myself not to chase as it was too early on.

Ayesha Rollinson at San Fran ITU Triathlon
Nov 17, 2008
When you lose something priceless, its return to you is like winning the emotion lottery. We all have something we have lost that has sentimental value. We all have something we pay into emotionally on a regular basis that we may not take proper stock of.

The best comparison would be one of those group lottery pools at work.

$2 every week does not seem like much.  You hardly notice the investment when you have a steady income.  That is until you get laid off.  Then you think:
Why did I invest $2 a week in this stupid lottery instead of putting it into a savings account?
I cannot afford $2 a week anymore...
At the same time there is a voice that says
I cannot afford not to put $2 in.  I cannot afford not to keep dreaming; I cannot afford not to stay positive.

For me, running and racing was my $2 a week investment.  I didn't notice that so much of my self worth, happiness and confidence hinged on my mobility.

Nov 14, 2008

After a good block of training, some rest and four mountain bike rides I was headed to Maui for my first Xterra in two years. Due to National Team and Olympic qualifying I have had to take a miss on all the Xterra fun over the last two years. So I had hung my bike up and said I wouldn't ride till after the Olympics.

So I dusted it off and madly tried to get my mountain skills back by riding with fellow Blue Comp Bikes ride Danial Sessford. He is a top Canada Cup circuit rider and he smacked me around for a ride to sharpen me up.
